Building Your Living Room

At Accent Lighting, we’re always excited to help homeowners find the perfect lighting for their houses, and over the past month or so, we’ve looked at lighting for your new game room, bedroom, and kitchen. We hope that you’ve been able to find some inspiration for your home, and in this post, we’re going to talk about building and designing the perfect living room. When you need new light fixtures, visit our store in Wichita right away!

The Ideal Sitting Area

In many homes, the sitting and entertainment areas are often one and the same; where you sit to watch TV is also where you sit to converse with guests who come to visit. However, this doesn’t have to be the case, and if you want to define a separate sitting area away from the TV, then we’re here to help. Some well-placed table and floor lamps can create the appeal you want, and of course the furniture configuration will inform how the space looks, feels, and functions.

The Entertainment Area

If you separate the sitting/conversation area from the entertainment area, then you can have the freedom to design the lighting for optimal TV viewing. Recessed lights and wall sconces that can be lowered through dimmer switches can help you create the ideal entertainment space for TV and movies. A table lamp next to your favorite chair will allow you to turn off the overhead lights and still be able to see as you sit down. Once the movie is over, you can turn the lamp back on, instead of fumbling in the dark for a switch or dimmer on the wall.

A Reading Nook

When you’re the only one in the house, your favorite thing to do may be to curl up with a good book. There’s nothing better than a cozy reading nook, complete with a comfortable chair and the perfect floor lamp that provides adequate light from above. If you have a fireplace in your home, consider creating a reading nook next to it. When choosing your floor lamp, make sure that it can be positioned so that the light comes over your shoulder, not directly above your head. You don’t want shadows falling across the pages of the book you’re trying to read!

A Craft and Play Area

If your living room doubles as a family room or arts and crafts area, then it’s important to have a designated space where you and the kids can play and create. A small table on one side of the room can make it easier to put together puzzles, draw, and do lots of other activities, without having to worry about being in the high-traffic areas of the room. A hanging pendant light can provide the illumination you need, but keep in mind that if the fixture is permanent, you could be limited on where the arts and crafts table can be placed.

There are many things to decide when building and designing your new living room, and the staff at Accent is here to help you choose the perfect lighting.
