Building Your Kitchen

Sep 9th 2021 Staff

So far in this blog series, we’ve covered building your game room and your bedroom. Hopefully you’ve found some tips on what to do when it comes to lighting your home, and in this post, we’ll take a look at building your new kitchen. Whether you’re renovating your home, or you’re in the middle of a new construction project, Accent Lighting in Wichita is here to help you find the perfect kitchen light fixtures!

Cooking and Prep Areas

When you’re in the kitchen, you’re likely spending your time prepping and cooking meals. You might make breakfast every Saturday morning, and it’s important to have the proper lighting above your counters and over your stove top. Under cabinet lighting can make prep much easier, and bright light above the stove will make it easier to see what it is that you’re cooking. You may have a vent hood with built-in lights, but if not, recessed lighting can be a great choice above your stove.

The Breakfast Nook

Many homeowners want that little breakfast nook in the kitchen where they can settle in on a weekend morning, enjoying their coffee, bacon, and eggs. The nook may just be a corner of the room with a small table, or it may be built into the architecture of the space. Whatever the case may be, having the right lighting can make the nook much more cozy. A small pendant or chandelier can make the space more inviting, and if the nook is near a window, put the light on a dimmer so that you can adjust the levels as necessary.

The Kitchen Sink

Once you’re done cooking, the next step is cleaning. You might simply rinse dishes before you put them in the dishwasher, but there will be those items that need to be washed by hand. A small pendant light above the sink can provide the illumination you need to see by as you clean up after dinner. If you’d rather not have a hanging fixture, a recessed light that’s focused on the sink basin can suffice. It’s important to keep in mind, however, that you want to be sure that the fixture is positioned correctly so that your head doesn’t cast a shadow when you stand at the sink.

The Kitchen Island

The kitchen island is often a must-have for homeowners, regardless of whether they’re building or renovating their house. This is where the kids come to do their homework, and where you have coffee with a friend with whom you haven’t talked for a long time. It’s important for the island to have the perfect lighting, and a pendant with multiple fixtures can provide illumination for the entire countertop. You’ll want the pendant to be high enough so that people can see those across from them when seated at the island, but low enough to provide focused lighting for meal prep, homework, and other tasks.
